  • Adults: No prior experience required. We work at a steady, pressure-free pace with clear weekly goals.

Private Drum Lessons — What We Cover

Every student gets a fully personalized lesson plan. No cookie-cutter approach — we adjust pace, repertoire, and technique goals to the individual.

STK

Stick Technique

Correct grip, controlled rebound, and balanced strokes from the very first lesson. Bad habits are much harder to fix later.

RTM

Reading Rhythm

Real notation from week one — quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, time signatures, and sight-reading at progressive tempos.

KIT

Drum Kit Coordination

Snare, bass, hi-hat, and toms working together. We build four-limb independence step by step using clear, achievable exercises.

SNG

Real Songs & Styles

Drum Lesson FAQs

What age should my child start drum lessons? +
Most children are ready for structured drum lessons around age 6 or 7. At that age we usually start on a practice pad to build stick technique and rhythm reading before moving to the full drum kit. Younger children can begin with hand percussion and rhythm games.
Do we need a drum kit at home? +
No. For the first several months, all your child needs at home is a practice pad and a pair of drumsticks — usually under $30 total. Most early skills (stick technique, rudiments, rhythm reading) are built on the practice pad. We recommend buying or renting a drum kit only when your child is fully committed and ready.
Are drum lessons going to be too loud at home? +
Lessons happen at our studio in Sorrento Valley, not at your home. For home practice, a practice pad is nearly silent — quieter than a TV. When students later move to a drum kit, low-volume cymbals, mesh drum heads, and electronic kits with headphones make home practice manageable in apartments and family homes.
Will my child actually learn to read music? +
Yes. From the first lessons we teach rhythm notation — quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, rests, and time signatures. Drum students at K&M sight-read real music, which makes them stronger musicians and prepares them for school bands, jazz ensembles, and conservatory programs.
Drums vs piano — which is better for a beginner? +
Both are excellent first instruments and develop different skills. Piano builds melody, harmony, and reading both clefs. Drums build rhythm, coordination, and listening. Many students do well starting with whichever instrument excites them most — engagement matters more than the choice. Some K&M students study both.
How long until my child plays a real song? +
Most beginners play a recognizable beat from a real song within 6–8 weeks. A complete song with verse, chorus, and fills typically comes between weeks 10 and 14 with consistent daily practice of 15–20 minutes.
Can adults start learning drums? +
Absolutely. We have adult drum students of every level — complete beginners, returning players who haven't touched sticks since high school, and lifelong hobbyists looking to refine their technique. Adult lessons are flexible, patient, and built around the music you actually want to play.
Where are lessons held? +
5703 Oberlin Dr, San Diego, CA 92121 — in Sorrento Valley, easily reachable from La Jolla, Carmel Valley, UTC, and Mira Mesa.
