Frequently Asked Questions

How much musical experience does my child need?

No prior experience is necessary! Our program is designed for beginners (typically starting around age 6-7) and guides them progressively. We assess placement for students with prior experience. We also offer toddler group classes from age 2.

What if my child loses interest?

This is the most common fear — and it's exactly what our program is designed to prevent. Children usually quit when progress feels slow and playing feels mechanical. Our ear training (solfeggio) makes progress faster and visible; choir and ensembles make music social; and recitals make it rewarding. Children rarely quit something they're getting good at. And because enrollment is year-by-year, you're never locked in if it's not the right fit.

Do we need an instrument at home?

Yes, consistent daily practice is crucial. Students will need access to a suitable instrument (acoustic piano, quality digital piano, or appropriate size string instrument). We provide guidance on rentals and purchases.

What is the time commitment?

Expect weekly private lessons (30-60 min depending on level), group theory/musicianship classes (e.g., Solfeggio, Theory, History), and ensemble (like Choir). Daily home practice grows from ~20 min initially to 60+ min in advanced grades.

Do you offer financial aid?

Yes. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, accessibility is core to our mission. We offer need-based scholarships and sliding scale tuition. Please indicate your interest during enrollment; we'll provide application details.

Is the 9-year commitment mandatory?

Not at all. While the curriculum is designed for comprehensive 9-year development, enrollment is year-by-year. Families join or transition out at any point — there's no binding long-term contract. We simply encourage completing each academic year for continuity.

What makes this different from regular lessons?

Our program offers a holistic, structured curriculum integrating private instruction with essential group learning (theory, aural skills, history, ensemble) from the start. This conservatory-inspired model fosters well-rounded musicianship, consistent progress benchmarks, and a supportive peer community.
