Start With the Basics

Strong foundations

What You Will Learn

Good clarinet playing brings listening, breath, and movement together. Lessons connect these skills to the music you are working on.

  • Tone and airflow: develop a steady sound and learn how mouth position shapes it.
  • Hand position and fingering: cover the tone holes and move between notes without tension.
  • Reading and rhythm: understand notes, rests, and pulse through practical examples.
  • Articulation and phrasing: start notes cleanly and shape a melody.
  • Scales and range: connect finger patterns and listening as your range grows.
  • Reed care and instrument habits: handle, assemble, and clean your clarinet properly.

Bring your current music and share any deadlines. We will match the lesson plan to your goals.

Private Lessons Built Around the Student

One-to-one instruction gives the teacher time to listen carefully, adjust the pace, and explain each step clearly — whether the goal is a first note, a school-band assignment, or a personal musical dream.

Students perform in our recitals throughout the year, on our own stage, so progress becomes something they can hear and share.

Beyond private lessons

Clarinet in Our 9-Year Program

For ages 6–15, clarinet can be the main instrument in our conservatory-inspired 9-Year Program. Alongside the weekly clarinet lesson, students study:

  • Solfeggio and ear training
  • Music theory
  • Music history and listening
  • Choir and ensemble playing

Families enroll one year at a time, and new students join each September.

Getting started

Your First Clarinet Lesson in Three Steps

  1. Book a Free Trial

Tell us the student's age, experience, and preferred days, and whether you already have a clarinet.

  2. Meet Your Teacher

Beginners start with setup and first sounds. Experienced players bring a piece and talk through goals.

  3. Choose Your Plan

Pick a 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly lesson and a schedule that fits your week.

Before buying an instrument

Choosing a Clarinet for a Beginner

A student B-flat clarinet is the usual starting instrument. Comfortable reach, an instrument in good working order, and a suitable reed matter far more than a high price tag.

Already have a clarinet? Bring it to your trial lesson. Still deciding? Ask us what to look for before you buy or rent.

Good Questions for Your First Visit

  • Which clarinet and reed strength should I use?
  • Should I bring my school-band book or current music?
  • Which lesson length fits my starting level?
  • How much should I practice each week?

For children, readiness depends on hand reach, comfort holding the instrument, and ability to follow instructions — we will assess this together at the trial lesson.

Common questions

Clarinet Lesson FAQs

What age can a child start clarinet lessons?

It depends on the child. Hand reach, the ability to hold the instrument, and comfort making a sound all matter, and many children are ready around ages 9–10. Book a free trial lesson and we will assess readiness together.

Do I need to read music before starting?

No. Beginners learn note reading and rhythm alongside their first playing skills. If you already read music, lessons build on what you know.

Can lessons help with school band?

Yes. Private lessons give extra time for parts that are hard to fix in a group rehearsal. Bring your band music and tell us where you need help — rhythm, articulation, finger coordination, or tone.

Can an adult learn clarinet from the beginning?

Absolutely. Adult beginners work on setup, reading, and technique step by step, and returning players rebuild familiar skills with manageable goals.

Do I need to own a clarinet?

You will need access to a suitable instrument for regular practice at home. Tell us whether you have one when you book, and we can advise on what to look for.

How long are clarinet lessons?

Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes weekly. Beginners and younger students usually start with 30 minutes; the right length is recommended at the trial lesson.

How much do clarinet lessons cost?

Tuition depends on lesson length. Contact us for current clarinet tuition — we will explain the options before you enroll, and the first trial lesson is free.

How much practice is expected?

Short, regular practice works best — most beginners do well with 15–20 minutes, five or six days a week. Your teacher will give you a clear routine each lesson.
